Indischrot and Guards Red: Reading the Name on a 1989 Porsche 944
Historical color study: a 1989 Porsche 944 photographed in May 2023. Naming context comes from Porsche’s 1989–1991 944 parts catalogue, revised July 24, 2017.

A color search can become confusing when the same German name appears beside different English labels. This 1989 944 is identified by its photographer as Indischrot, with India Red used in the description. Porsche’s own 944 catalogue provides a stronger starting point for understanding the naming than guessing from the photograph.
Read the name and the code separately
The catalogue’s color-identification diagram pairs Guards Red with Indischrot. Its paint listing also records Indischrot with the reference L M3A. The photographed car’s description uses LM3A, which makes that entry particularly relevant.
This is a naming and documentation connection, not proof that every paint sold under these names across all years has an identical formula. For a particular car, its paint label and original records matter more than a broad color nickname. A photograph cannot establish whether its finish is original or has been refinished.
Two views of the same red car
From the front, bright highlights trace the 944’s raised fenders while the hood carries reflections from the surroundings. Black bumper inserts and window trim break up the red; silver wheels keep the lower half lighter than an all-black wheel treatment would.

The rear view adds something the front photograph cannot: the red quarter panel sits beside a broad glass hatch and black spoiler. It shows how much of the car’s visual identity comes from the balance of paint, glass and trim, rather than the paint alone.
Keep Indischrot, Guards Red and the photographer’s India Red wording attached to their sources when building a reference collection. They are useful search terms; the model-specific paint reference is the next step when the question becomes more precise.
